Nationwide power outage hits Ghana

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) reported that the National Interconnected Transmission System experienced a power system disturbance at approximately 3:11 a.m. This disturbance led to a widespread power outage across the country early Wednesday morning.

According to GRIDCo, the incident caused the simultaneous tripping of several power-generating plants, which affected the stability of the national electricity transmission network. In response, GRIDCo immediately activated its system restoration procedures to restore the electricity supply to the affected areas.

The company explained that the disturbance resulted in the automatic shutdown of certain generating plants connected to the national grid, leading to outages in various locations. GRIDCo stated that its engineers and system operators were deployed and were working continuously alongside other power sector stakeholders to restore supply as quickly as possible, while also ensuring the safety and integrity of the power system.

“Our engineers and system operators are working continuously, in close collaboration with power sector stakeholders, to restore power within the shortest possible time without compromising safety,” the statement said. The company assured the public that restoring the electricity supply remained its top priority and that all necessary operational measures had been activated to stabilise the grid.

As part of its response, GRIDCo said it had also commenced a comprehensive technical investigation to determine the precise cause of the disturbance. It noted that identifying the source of the system event was essential to preventing similar occurrences in the future and strengthening the reliability of the national transmission network.

The disturbance resulted in the simultaneous tripping of some generating plants across the national power system, leading to interruption of electricity supply.

GRIDCo has activated its established system restoration procedures. Our engineers and system operators are working continuously, in close collaboration with power sector stakeholders to restore power within the shortest time possible without compromising safety.

At the same time, a comprehensive technical investigation has commenced to determine the precise cause of this system event.

GRIDCo sincerely apologises for the inconvenience and appreciates the patience and understanding of the public during this period. We remain fully committed to restoring supply to all affected customers as quickly and safely as possible and will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
