Severe overnight rains on Sunday have left hundreds of Afienya residents in the Greater Accra Region trapped in their homes as floodwaters engulf large parts of the community. Reporting from the scene Monday morning, JoyNews’ Carlos Calony described the situation as dire, with vast sections submerged. Former Assembly Member for the Afienya Electoral Area, Habib Awudu Mohammed, confirmed that the flooding has spread across Afienya town, TOR Estate, Jerusalem, Sanford Clinic, Ablekuma, and surrounding areas.

The situation here is extremely challenging; people are trapped in their rooms and unable to move or take any action. Personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Ghana National Fire Service have started entering the community to rescue affected residents.

Fortunately, we were able to contact the NADMO rescue team, and some members are already on the scene alongside numerous firefighters. We are doing our best to find a way to rescue the people, he stated. He also mentioned that the last time Afienya experienced flooding of this magnitude was 16 years ago. Additionally, the flooding has caused severe traffic congestion along the main Afienya–Tema road, disrupting the movement of commuters and motorists.
