The flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has criticized President Akufo-Addo for unveiling a statue in his honour despite failing to complete essential developmental projects. Speaking during a mini rally in Ajofua in the Bia West constituency, the former president said while the NPP was quick to host high-profile ceremonies and unveil statues, they have struggled to follow through on actual project completions that impact the lives of Ghanaians.
In the last few weeks, there has been an uproar over the dedication of a statue at Effia-Nkwanta roundabout in Takoradi honouring President Akufo-Addo for his contributions to the Western Region’s development. Former President Mahama added to the criticisms, branding it as a monument rooted in self-praise.
“What they [NPP government] know best is building statues. You’ll have to leave office and when the people remember the good things you have done for them and they want to honour you, then they can build you statue,” he told his listeners. He said if it came to building statues as a means of self-reward he would have dozens of them spread across the country.
