The Minister for Energy, John Jinapor, has announced the full restoration of power generation at the Akosombo plant following the recent disruption caused by a fire outbreak, with the facility now operating at full capacity to supply the national grid. In a Facebook post on Friday, May 1, the Minister stated, “Mission accomplished. All generation units are now back in service,” signalling a return to stability after days of power interruptions.
Mr. Jinapor explained that the recovery was achieved through the coordinated efforts of engineers, technicians, and emergency response teams who worked tirelessly around the clock to restore operations.
“In the face of a major system disruption, and against all odds, our engineers, technicians, and emergency teams laboured relentlessly to restore power and safeguard system stability,” he remarked.
He further commended the Ghana Grid Company, the Volta River Authority, and the Electricity Company of Ghana for their collaboration in resolving the crisis. The disruption, caused by a fire at the GRIDCo substation in Akosombo, resulted in the loss of more than 1,000 megawatts of power and led to intermittent outages across several parts of the country.
With all generation units now back online, authorities confirm that the system has regained stability, paving the way for the restoration of normal electricity supply nationwide.
