Minority pledges full cooperation with probe into ECG missing containers

The Minority in Parliament has pledged to fully cooperate with investigations into the disappearance of over 1,300 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at Tema Harbour. Former Deputy Energy Minister Collins Adomako Mensah reiterated the Minority’s commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency in this matter.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM‘s Newsnight on Tuesday, March 25, he stated, “Listening to my brother and friend, John Jinapor, I am as shocked as he is. The continuous vanishing of containers from the ports is not something you hear of very often. As the Minority Deputy Ranking on the Energy Committee, I want to assure him of our full cooperation to ensure that the culprits are brought to book,” he said.

This comes after the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, raised an alarm over the disappearance of over 1,300 ECG containers. A committee set up to investigate the issue uncovered widespread procurement breaches spanning several years. Mr Adomako Mensah further emphasised the importance of a thorough investigation, assuring that the Minority would support any measures aimed at uncovering the truth and restoring order to ECG’s operations.

When asked if he had been aware of any issues during his tenure, he denied having any prior knowledge. “Not at all. I joined the Ministry at the end, so I didn’t encounter this specific information. However, the procurement breaches, as explained by my brother, are concerning. I sincerely hope that is not the case because merging the procurement and estate departments and appointing someone with limited procurement experience to oversee contracts at ECG is highly unusual,” he stated. He emphasized that ECG has structured approval processes involving both the board and management, making it essential to investigate how such a significant loss could occur.
