“Military personnel have been deployed to Bawku Senior High School after a student disturbance led to the destruction of school property and the reported assault of a teacher. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, June 15, when some students allegedly went on a rampage following the refusal of school authorities to permit examination malpractice during the ongoing WASSCE.
Confirming the unrest, Bawku Municipal Director of Education, Isaac Abweko Azasoo, said it began around 1:00 a.m. and involved final-year students expected to complete their exams later this week. He explained that tensions escalated when management and staff attempted to enforce examination regulations, sparking resistance from some students. Mr. Azasoo noted that the disturbance resulted in extensive damage to school property.
He further disclosed that one teacher was allegedly abducted by the students during the unrest, while another teacher was assaulted and subsequently rushed to the hospital for treatment. The injured teacher has since been referred to Bolgatanga for further medical attention. To prevent further disturbances and restore calm on campus, military personnel have been deployed to the school to maintain law and order.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the extent of the damage caused or whether any arrests have been made in connection with the incident. The situation is currently under control as security personnel remain on the school premises.
