Akwapem North MP Sammi Awuku has criticized the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), claiming it prioritizes public relations and image-building over the genuine needs of Ghanaians. In an interview on Channel One TV, Mr. Awuku argued that the current administration’s policies have not positively impacted the lives of ordinary citizens, who continue to face significant economic difficulties.
He pointed to rising utility tariffs and the introduction of the GH¢1 Fuel Levy as evidence of the government’s detachment from the daily struggles of the population. “Electricity tariffs rose by 11% in 2024 and increased by more than 17% in July 2025,” he noted. “Water tariffs have also seen a 6% hike. These increases demonstrate a clear disconnect between government rhetoric and the reality on the ground,” he added.
Mr. Awuku further criticised the government’s recent announcement of scrapping fuel allocations for public appointees, describing the move as disingenuous. “I see a trend. We have stated that this government focuses on three things: public relations, optics, and appearances,” he said.
“They say they’ve scrapped the fuel allocation for appointees, yet we see active fuel depots at Jubilee House and Osu Castle serving individuals, including National Security operatives, who may not even qualify for such benefits.” He concluded by accusing the government of hypocrisy in its implementation of austerity measures: “It is like the Ghanaian is being asked to tighten her belt, while the government uses elastic around its waist.”
