President John Dramani Mahama has given assurance to those affected by the 2023 Akosombo Dam spillage that the government is finalizing steps to commence compensation payments. During his Resetting Ghana Tour in the Volta Region on Thursday, July 16, the President stated that the verification, assessment, and administrative tasks are almost complete, clearing the way for payouts to those impacted. He emphasized that the compensation process will be conducted fairly, transparently, and responsibly to guarantee that all eligible victims receive the support they deserve.
The government has set aside GH₵225 million in the 2025 Budget for compensating victims of the disaster, which forced thousands from their homes and caused widespread destruction to houses, farmlands, and livelihoods throughout Volta Region communities. President Mahama noted that this allocation is just the start of the compensation process and assured residents that more funds would be made available in the subsequent budget if the initial amount falls short.
“Government has remained fully engaged in addressing the aftermath of that unfortunate event. The necessary verification, assessment and administrative processes relating to compensation are being concluded, and I wish to assure all of the affected people that the government remains committed to ensuring that the process is finalised fairly, transparently and responsibly. “Once this process is finalised, the Minister of Finance made allocation in this year’s budget to start the payment of compensation. If the money allocated is not enough, allocation will be made in next year’s budget to continue the payment,” President Mahama said.
