The Volta River Authority (VRA) is anticipating minimal damage in the upcoming water spillage from the Akosombo Dam. VRA has announced that a controlled water release from the dam will occur in the coming weeks. The authority aims to apply lessons learned from previous experiences.
Director of Environment and Sustainable Development at the VRA, Ben Sackey said the Authority has begun extensive stakeholder engagement. “Every year, we come and have an education on the latest spill, the district assembly can bear witness to that, since 2011. But, the number of people and those who were part was limited, but from what has happened [that is why we have engaged lots of people], the Director of Environment and Sustainable Development at VRA stated.
The spillage, which started on September 15, 2023, resulted in the displacement of approximately 39,000 residents and the loss of farmlands. It was intensified for three weeks to protect the integrity of the Dam. As a result, eight districts across three regions – Asuogyaman, Shai Osudoku, North Tongu, Central Tongu, South Tongu, Anlo, Keta Municipal, Ketu South Municipal, and Ada East, suffered severe flooding.
