Speaking at the 2025 World Drug Day at the Accra International Conference Centre, Her Excellency, Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, called for the prevention of illicit drugs in the country. She emphasised the importance of prevention in the fight against drug abuse and noted that Ghana has made progress against conventional narcotics but the shift to synthetic opioids demands adaptability.
“The evidence is clear: we must invest in prevention,” the Vice President stated, emphasising the theme of World Drug Day 2025. “We need to recognise the urgency of this issue and take appropriate, practical steps to implement effective preventive measures,” she noted. Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang praised the Narcotics Control Commission for its commitment to combating drug abuse and illegal trafficking. She highlighted recent operations by the Commission that have led to the seizure of large quantities of illicit substances and the dismantling of criminal syndicates, showcasing Ghana’s determination in the fight against drugs.
The Vice President urged stakeholders to support the Commission with the necessary tools, training, and resources to stay ahead of the evolving threats. “We must also address substance use disorders with compassion,” the Vice President emphasised. The operationalisation of the Substance Use Disorder Rehabilitation Fund is a commendable move, and we must ensure that it is effectively implemented.”
