The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, led a team of officers from the operations, investigations, and intelligence units to Bawku in the Upper East Region to assess the local security situation. According to a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service on April 10, 2025, this visit comes in response to a violent confrontation between local youth and the police, which resulted in the death of one individual, Fuseini Iddrisu, and left five others injured.
The injured include a police officer and an immigration officer, all of whom are currently receiving medical treatment. The statement added that calm was restored to the area on April 9, through the joint efforts of the Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces. The police further disclosed that some of their properties were destroyed during the unrest.
The report mentioned two police vehicles, a rented police accommodation in Binduri, and the private homes of some police officers. The Police Service has assured the public that security has been increased in Bawku and its surrounding areas, with ongoing joint patrols by both the police and the military. Additionally, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and his team plan to visit Bawku to express condolences to the family of the deceased, visit the injured individuals currently receiving treatment, and support the officers who lost their property due to the violence.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to working collaboratively with the Ghana Armed Forces, traditional leaders, opinion leaders, and all relevant stakeholders to maintain peace, security, and order in Bawku.
