Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta

The government through Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta will next week withdraw the controversial E-Levy bill currently before Parliament. The bill will however be relaid immediately after.

This was disclosed by Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin during the presentation of the business statement for the ensuing week.

Minority Chief Whip Muntaka Mubarak, however, demanded certainty from the majority and government on the way forward for the bill.

According to the Asawase MP, the government must not rush in returning the bill to parliament under a certificate of urgency but allow the Finance Committee time to embark on stakeholder consultations.

The government has proposed a 1.75% levy on all electronic transfers to help reduce the country’s debts while enabling it to fund the growing demands of the Ghanaians.

Even though the government has now resorted to holding town halls to educate members of the general public on the need to accept the implementation of the E-levy bill meant to widen the government’s tax net, a large section of the public is still opposed to the controversial levy.
