The Ministry of Energy has confirmed that the GH₵1 fuel levy will be implemented starting Monday, July 14, as part of the government’s efforts to restore stability and financial accountability in the country’s power sector. Richmond Rockson, the Ministry’s spokesperson, confirmed the start date during an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday.
He explained that the current administration inherited a sector burdened with substantial debts and structural inefficiencies. The levy is viewed as a necessary corrective measure aimed at sustaining power generation and ensuring long-term energy security. “This government inherited a very challenging energy sector—not only the power sector but also the petroleum sector, both upstream and downstream. It will require sacrifices from all citizens to help restore the sector,” he stated.
The announcement of the GH₵1 fuel levy several months ago sparked widespread public outcry, with many Ghanaians, particularly those in opposition political parties, expressing concerns about the rising cost of living. Meanwhile, the Energy Ministry insists that the levy is necessary to revamp the sector and has since authorised the Ghana Revenue Authority to collect it.
