Ghanaians must trust the process; data prices will drop by year-end – Sam George

Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Mr. Sam Nartey George, has assured Ghanaians that data prices will decrease by the end of 2025. Speaking at the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day event on Monday, May 19, the Minister addressed growing frustrations over high internet costs, particularly on social media. Mr. George is facing pressure on X (formerly Twitter), where users have called for immediate action to eliminate tariffs that are reportedly inflating data prices by over 39%. “My promise was that by the end of this year, we will see prices drop—and my promise remains. Just trust the process,” he stated.

He emphasised that while he shares the public’s concerns, the solution requires a deliberate and structured approach rather than a quick fix. “I’ve been trending over the weekend on X because people think data costs must be cheaper by just the stroke of my pen,” he explained. Mr. George disclosed that a committee he formed to address the issue had already completed its work ahead of schedule. “I set up a committee whose mandate in 14 days was to develop a roadmap that would lead to a drop in the prices of data. In 13 days, they delivered that roadmap.

According to the Minister, Ghana’s current data pricing problems stem from market distortions that have accumulated over the past eight years. We’re dealing with eight years of distortion of the market. I wish I could fix it arbitrarily, but it takes a carefully calculated effort,” he said. He assured the public that the roadmap is now being implemented and urged Ghanaians to remain patient as progress unfolds.
