Ghana to evacuate citizens from Iran – Foreign Affairs Minister

The Government of Ghana has announced plans to evacuate its citizens from Iran due to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa made this announcement in a social media post on Monday, June 16, emphasising that the protection of Ghanaian lives is the primary motivation for this decision.

“The Mahama Administration has decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran in the interest of their safety, following the escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” Mr. Ablakwa stated. He also revealed that Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect to ensure the safety of diplomatic staff.

The evacuation operation, which will be carried out through Iran’s land borders, covers all Ghanaian nationals in the country, including diplomats, students, professionals, and other residents. Mr Ablakwa stressed the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of every Ghanaian, regardless of their location.

He also noted that the government is closely monitoring developments in Israel and will provide guidance in due course. “In the interim, we have instructed that embassy operations in Tel Aviv be reduced to the barest minimum, and all Ghanaians in Israel must maintain close communication with our consular department,” he added. The Minister concluded by reaffirming Ghana’s call for diplomacy, urging both nations to end hostilities and prioritise peaceful resolution.
