Fuel prices up: Petrol going for GH₵12.88, diesel GH₵14.38 a litre

Some oil marketing companies have begun increasing the prices of petroleum products at the pumps as of today, July 16, 2025. Major player GOIL is now selling a liter of petrol for GH₵12.88, up from the previous price of GH₵12.07. Diesel has also seen an increase, going from GH₵13.20 to GH₵14.38.

Market leader Star Oil has raised its prices as well, with petrol priced at GH₵12.59 per liter. However, some of its service stations are offering the product at a lower price of GH₵11.99. Diesel at Star Oil stations has increased to GH₵13.99, although some locations are selling it for GH₵13.79. Several oil marketing companies have informed JOYBUSINESS that they will be adjusting their prices later today.

Reasons for price increase

Many oil marketing companies have informed JOYBUSINESS that the increase in fuel prices is due to the implementation of a one cedi fuel levy on diesel and petrol prices, which took effect on July 16, 2025. Dr. Riverson Oppong, the Chief Executive of the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies, remarked that prices might have decreased by approximately 2 percent if the one cedi levy had not been introduced on that date.

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers is strongly urging the government to reconsider the taxes included in the pricing structure of petroleum products to provide some relief to consumers. Executive Secretary Duncan Amoah stated that reviewing these taxes could alleviate the burden on consumers while the government proceeds with the implementation of the fuel levy on various petroleum products.
