A leading Member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Arthur Kobina Kennedy has stated that the actions of the Special Prosecutor, Kiss Agyebeng are inconsistent. According to him, there are instances that the Special Prosecutor should have acted but failed to take action with regard to issues on illegal mining (galamsey) and other national matters.
This comes on the back of former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng saying that he is on a GHC2 million bail after his arrest by the OSP. According to him, the arrest was in connection with an ongoing investigation into work by the dissolved Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) which he chaired.
He also indicated that he was invited to the OSP’s office three weeks ago and was arrested upon his arrival. Commenting on the issue on GHOne TV with Lantam Papanko, Mr. Arthur Kennedy described the arrest of Prof. Frimpong-Boateng as unfortunate.
“I think that after Frimpong-Boateng’s report we all see evidence that clearly galamsey is going on. We can see the dirty water with mercury that our children and pregnant women are drinking. We can see the forests that are being depleted. We can see party officials bracingly doing galamsey with the President coming out to defend some of them.
“So the idea that all the eleven Ministers who were on the Inter-ministerial Committee, Professor Frimpong-Boateng who is the one trying to do something about it is the one who gets arrested is really unfortunate. And then I think that the Special Prosecutor’s personal manners when they are talking about consecrating saints then the same person who describes himself as the conscience of the nation,” Dr. Arthur Kennedy stated.
He continued: “If you juxtapose those two statements they are inconsistent and those claims that nobody can influence him and no political pressure. And he himself has admitted that he can pick up issues even without anybody making complaints.”
