Francis Sosu appeals to govt to dualise Pantang–Abokobi road

Francis Xavier Sosu, Member of Parliament for Madina, has urged the government to dualise the Pantang–Abokobi Road, describing the stretch as too vital to remain a single carriageway. He made the appeal on Saturday, February 7, 2026, while inspecting ongoing rehabilitation works on the road, which connects the Pantang Junction traffic lights to the Abokobi Boie Junction. Mr. Sosu noted that the Pantang Road has long been a source of concern due to the critical institutions and growing population it serves.

“This road has been a major issue. Along this stretch, we have the Pantang Hospital, now marking its 50th anniversary, the upcoming headquarters of the Ghana Health Service, several Mental Health Authority projects, including a nurses’ training college, as well as an expanding residential community,” he said.

Mr Sosu noted that the presence of these major health and national institutions has made the road extremely strategic, stressing that its poor condition has raised serious concerns over the years. “Many people have raised concerns about the poor state of this road, especially given the presence of major health facilities here,” he added.

He revealed that approval for the rehabilitation project was granted by President John Dramani Mahama through the Roads Minister, following persistent concerns. “His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, acting through the Roads Minister, has authorised the construction of this road,” he stated. “As a Member of Parliament, it is my duty to monitor progress, engage with contractors and engineers, and evaluate the work being done. So far, I am satisfied with what I have observed.” While welcoming the commencement of the project, Mr. Sosu seized the moment to strongly advocate for the road’s upgrade into a dual carriageway.

“I would like to use this opportunity to appeal to His Excellency, the President and the Roads Minister to consider dualising this road. Given the volume of traffic and the major national institutions located here, dualisation would be a lasting legacy and would significantly improve movement for residents of the Pantang, Okataba, and PNT areas,” he said.

He acknowledged that the current approval is for a single carriageway but appealed for a reconsideration. “Although the current approval is for a single carriageway, we humbly request that the Roads Minister visit the site to appreciate the nature of the road and consider upgrading it to a dual carriageway for the benefit of the people,” he added.

He also appealed to residents living along the road to cooperate with contractors, noting that construction activities would come with some level of disruption. “Once construction begins, there will be some disruptions. People living along the road may experience inconvenience, some structures may be affected, and there may be temporary evacuations,” Mr Sosu said.

He stressed that the project is ultimately being undertaken for the benefit of the community and called for patience throughout the construction period. “There will be some discomfort, but we ask for patience until the project is completed for the betterment of the entire community,” he added.

Meanwhile, the contractor working on the project, Awerco Construction, has assured residents that measures have been put in place to ensure the timely completion of the works. The Managing Director of the firm, Joseph Adams, said his team will work both day and night to overcome traffic challenges and accelerate progress, noting that night work will be critical due to the absence of an alternative route.

He appealed to residents and motorists to cooperate with traffic control measures, stressing that patience and adherence to road signs will help ensure the project is completed on schedule.
