Four rescued, one feared dead after Adenta building collapse

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has completed a major overnight search and rescue operation after the collapse of a two-storey residential building near Da Yesu Ase Supermarket at Adenta New Site during Wednesday evening’s heavy rains.

The incident, which occurred at approximately 6:36 p.m., triggered the swift deployment of rescue teams from GNFS Headquarters, with additional support from the Legon and Abelemkpe Fire Stations.

Five occupants — three adults and two children — were trapped when the structure gave way. They were identified as Margaret Kpeli, believed to be in her late 30s; Fred Atagba, also in his late 30s; Solomon; and two children, Seyeram Dzigda and David Dzigda.

Rescue teams, working alongside community members, managed to pull four survivors from the debris. Fred Atagba, Solomon, Seyeram Dzigda, and David Dzigda were rescued alive with injuries and transported to the 37 Military Hospital for treatment. A dog trapped in the collapsed building was also rescued during the operation. After hours of sustained effort, firefighters recovered the remaining victim, Margaret Kpeli, from the rubble in an unconscious state. She was subsequently handed over to the Adenta District Police for further action.

The operation, which involved coordinated efforts from multiple fire stations and supporting agencies, was officially concluded at 22:54 hours. The GNFS praised the swift response of residents who assisted in the initial rescue efforts and acknowledged the collaboration of the Ghana Police Service, medical teams, and other emergency responders in bringing the mission to a close.
