Fire at Akosombo substation disrupts power supply across Ghana

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has confirmed a significant fire outbreak at its Akosombo Substation in the Eastern Region, which has disrupted electricity supply to parts of the country. In a press statement issued on April 23, the company reported that the incident occurred at approximately 2:01 p.m., affecting operations at the facility and transmission across the national grid.

GRIDCo indicated that emergency response teams were swiftly deployed to the site to contain the situation and assess the extent of damage. Technical teams have also commenced work to restore normal operations as quickly as possible. The company added that a comprehensive evaluation is underway to determine the full impact of the fire on infrastructure and power generation, with engineers prioritising system stabilisation to minimise further disruptions.

GRIDCo assured the public that all necessary measures were being taken to manage the situation and maintain grid stability, while calling for calm as restoration efforts continue. The Akosombo Substation is a critical component of Ghana’s electricity transmission network, linking power from key generation sources, including the Volta River Authority, to distribution utilities and bulk customers nationwide.

Any disruption at the facility is therefore likely to have ripple effects across sections of the country, particularly in areas dependent on power transmitted through the eastern corridor of the grid. GRIDCo said it would provide further updates as more details become available, including the cause of the fire and timelines for full restoration.

The company reiterated its commitment to ensuring a reliable electricity supply and maintaining the integrity of the National Interconnected Transmission System, which serves as the backbone of power distribution in Ghana and parts of West Africa. The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has confirmed a major fire outbreak at its Akosombo Substation in the Eastern Region, resulting in disruptions to power supply in parts of the country. According to a press statement issued on April 23, the incident occurred at about 2:01 p.m., affecting operations at the facility and impacting electricity transmission within the national grid.

GRIDCo said emergency response teams were immediately deployed to the site and are working to contain the situation and assess the extent of damage. Technical teams have also begun efforts to restore normal operations as quickly as possible.

GRIDCo has announced that a comprehensive assessment is underway to determine the extent of damage caused by the fire and its implications for infrastructure and power generation. Engineers are prioritising system stabilisation to reduce further disruptions, while the company assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to manage the situation and safeguard grid reliability.

The Akosombo Substation, a vital hub in Ghana’s electricity transmission network, channels power from major generation sources—including the Volta River Authority—to distribution utilities and bulk customers nationwide. Any interruption at the facility therefore risks ripple effects across parts of the country, particularly areas reliant on the eastern corridor of the grid.

GRIDCo stated that additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available, including the cause of the fire and timelines for full restoration. The company reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a dependable electricity supply and protecting the integrity of the National Interconnected Transmission System, which serves as the backbone of power distribution in Ghana and extends to parts of West Africa.
