The president of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Frank Serebour, has urged Ghanaians to use their votes to hold politicians accountable in the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey. He emphasised that the Association has joined this fight not only to protect the environment but also to safeguard public health and reduce the burden of preventable diseases.
Dr. Serebour argued that political pressure is the most effective tool for bringing about change. “When the GMA asked political parties to declare their positions and sign a pact, we sought clarity on where they stand. Some suggested strikes, but strikes are not sustainable. The only consequence politicians fear is losing elections. My message is: if you don’t take action against this issue, we’ll vote you out,” he declared.
He maintained that galamsey continues to be widespread in many communities and stressed the importance of ongoing public mobilisation to demand concrete action from leaders. “We must continue to apply pressure. We will keep talking and advocating,” he added, noting that while strikes may raise awareness, they cannot deliver the long-term reforms needed.
