ECG begins major upgrade of Adenta substation to boost power reliability

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has launched a major infrastructure upgrade to enhance the quality and reliability of power supply in Adenta and surrounding communities within the Greater Accra Region. The project entails expanding the capacity of the Adenta Primary Substation from 40MVA to 80MVA, aimed at addressing persistent power fluctuations driven by rising demand in the area. As part of the upgrade, ECG is installing two new 30/39MVA transformers to replace the existing 20/26MVA units currently in service at the substation. This initiative forms part of ECG’s broader commitment to delivering stable, reliable, and high-quality electricity to its customers.

During a media inspection of the project site in Adenta on Wednesday, February 25, Acting General Manager of Accra Subtransmission, Ing. Emmanuel Addo, stated that upon completion, the project will significantly improve power supply stability across Adenta and its adjoining communities.

He noted that the upgrade will also strengthen the power network infrastructure to meet the enclave’s growing electricity demand. “Three 20/26 transformers currently support the Adenta enclave, and the project intends to replace two of these 20/26 MVA transformers with new 30/39 MVA transformers. This upgrade aims to enhance the capacity of the transformers to accommodate the increasing demand”.

According to him, the project commenced on Sunday, February 22, 2026, and is being executed in two phases. He disclosed that approximately 45% of the work has been completed so far. “The first phase will be completed on Friday, February 27, 2026. The timeline for the second phase will be determined after the successful commissioning of the first phase, which is currently under installation,” he stated.

Providing further details, the Regional General Manager for Accra East, Ing. Bismark Otoo, explained that customers in and around Adenta have been experiencing frequent outages due to a significant increase in load demand, which has outstripped the capacity of the existing transformers.

He stressed that the upgrade is essential not only to resolve existing supply challenges but also to meet the future electricity demands of customers in Adenta and neighbouring communities. Once completed, the project will deliver a stable and improved power supply to residents in Adenta, Amrahia, Oyarifa, Danfa, parts of Madina, Teiman, and other adjoining areas.

Ing. Otoo further disclosed that similar initiatives are currently underway across the Accra East Region, reflecting ECG’s broader commitment to strengthening supply reliability and enhancing customer satisfaction.

He also cautioned the public against engaging private electricians during power outages, noting that such practices often lead to transformer overloading and damage through illegal connections, the use of substandard fuses, and unauthorised phase transfers.

Customers experiencing outages have been advised to contact ECG’s Contact Centre on 0302 611 611, visit the nearest district office, lodge complaints via the ECG PowerApp, or reach the company through its social media handles @ECGghOfficial on Facebook, X, and Instagram for prompt assistance. ECG reiterated its commitment to delivering improved service and called for the cooperation of customers as it works to strengthen the power supply network across the region.
