A cholera outbreak has claimed the lives of 2 people as the Kwesimintsim Government Hospital records 19 new cases of cholera infection within a span of just two hours. The Ghana Health Service has issued a public alert regarding the outbreak in affected areas.
Meanwhile, the Medical Superintendent of the Kwesiminstim Hospital Dr. Osei Frimpong, has expressed his concerns to Connect News, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. “We’re seeing a steady rise in new cases daily, with two patients recently brought in deceased. Our investigation confirms that these cases are cholera-related, and the situation is becoming increasingly alarming.”
“We urge the public to be vigilant: if you or someone you know is experiencing frequent diarrhoea, please avoid self-medication and seek medical attention immediately.” “Today alone, we’ve recorded 19 new cases within a 2-hour window, and we anticipate this number will increase by the end of the day. The situation is dire, and we’re appealing to the public to report any suspected cases early to prevent further spread.” He announced.
Dr Frimpong is urgently calling on the Regional Health Directorate to provide additional health professionals to support the hospital, citing the overwhelming number of new cases received this morning. “We’re facing additional challenges, including a shortage of essential medical supplies such as drips, plasters, and paracetamol. Furthermore, we’ve encountered difficulties in caring for elderly patients who require assistance with toileting. To address this, we’ve procured adult diapers.
“However, the Regional Health Directorate has instructed us not to charge patients for these expenses, placing a significant burden on our facility. We’re appealing for donations or support with these essential items, as our staff are working tirelessly to provide care.”
“Given the rapid escalation of the situation, we anticipate the need for additional healthcare personnel. We’re currently in discussions with the Regional Health Directorate to expedite reinforcements and ensure we can provide timely care to the affected individuals.”
