The government is poised to make a key decision on constitutional review proposals as President John Dramani Mahama convenes a special Cabinet meeting on Thursday, May 14, to deliberate on recommendations submitted by the review committee.
Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed the development, noting that a draft position paper has already been prepared following extensive scrutiny by the Attorney General and the President’s legal team. He explained that the President had earlier directed a detailed study of the committee’s report to guide the government’s response to the proposals.
According to him, that review process has now been completed, paving the way for Cabinet to adopt a final position on the recommendations. “So Thursday, 14th May, there will be a special cabinet session chaired by the president himself to consider the draft position paper,” he said on Joy News.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu explained that the outcome of the meeting will determine the government’s official response to the various proposals under review. He added that the approved document will later be made public for citizens to understand the government’s position.
He noted that, unlike a commission of inquiry, the constitutional review committee requires not a white paper but a position paper from the government. He further explained that the Cabinet’s meeting is focused mainly on the constitutional review report, although other matters may also be considered.
According to him, once Cabinet approves the document, the government will move to the next stage of implementation, including the setting up of an implementation committee. He added that the proposals will be assessed individually, with some expected to be accepted, others modified, and some rejected based on feasibility and other considerations. He added that the government will engage the public further once Cabinet concludes its deliberations.
