National Theatre to Undergo Major Rehabilitation

The National Theatre of Ghana is poised for a major transformation into a modern, 21st‑century cultural hub following high‑level talks between Ghanaian officials and a visiting Chinese delegation. The discussions, held at the iconic facility, formed part of an official courtesy call by China’s Assistant Minister of Commerce, Mr. Zhang Li, who met with key Ghanaian stakeholders to deliberate on the theatre’s rehabilitation.

The visit is seen as a significant step in strengthening Ghana–China cultural and economic ties, with the proposed modernisation expected to boost the theatre’s capacity to host world‑class performing arts and cultural events. Senior officials and technical experts from both countries participated in the meeting to review the structural, technical, and operational requirements of the project.

The Chinese delegation, led by Assistant Minister Zhang Li, included Ambassador Cong Song, Economic Counsellor Li Yaohong, and other representatives from the Chinese Embassy and Ministry of Commerce. Representing Ghana were the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, National Theatre Board Chairperson Ms Korkor Amarteifio, National Theatre Executive Director Mr Henry Herbert Malm, as well as officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, the Ministry of Finance and Architectural and Engineering Services Limited (AESL).

Discussions centred on transforming the National Theatre into a venue that meets contemporary international standards for the performing arts. The planned rehabilitation is expected to deliver major structural upgrades, alongside the installation of advanced acoustic systems, modern lighting technology, and enhanced digital infrastructure.

Technical experts from AESL, together with representatives of the relevant ministries, reviewed preliminary project requirements to ensure the modernisation aligns with Ghana’s broader tourism, cultural, and creative arts development agenda. Once completed, the upgraded facility is expected to better serve performers, producers, cultural organisations, and audiences, while reinforcing Accra’s position as a prime destination for major cultural and entertainment events.
