Baba Jamal has achieved a decisive victory in the Ayawaso East by-election, returning to Parliament after a closely monitored poll held on Tuesday. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate received 10,884 votes, defeating his main opponent, Yusif Ali Baba of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 4,009 votes.
Independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda collected 1,885 votes, while Ibrahim Idrissu and Kanor David received 43 and 104 votes, respectively. In total, 16,928 valid votes were cast, along with 120 rejected ballots, bringing the overall number of votes cast to 17,048. This by-election was held following the passing of the constituency’s MP, Mahama Naser Toure, in January. Voting across polling stations was generally peaceful, although turnout was low in several locations.
The outcome aligns with projections by Global InfoAnalytics, which had forecast a commanding lead for the NDC candidate ahead of the polls. The victory not only strengthens the NDC’s hold on Ayawaso East but also marks Baba Jamal’s return to Parliament, where he previously served as MP for Akwatia before his diplomatic role as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria.
He is expected to be sworn in to represent the constituency in the coming days.
