“The University of Ghana has directed all staff and students to suspend travel to South Africa until further notice, citing escalating security concerns following anti‑migrant demonstrations and violent attacks against foreign nationals. In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 7, the university noted that the unrest has disrupted public life and turned violent, raising fears for the safety of foreigners.
The advisory instructed responsible officers to halt approvals for travel requests to South Africa as part of measures to protect members of the university community. Meanwhile, those already in South Africa have been urged to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions to safeguard their well-being.
“…avoid locations of demonstrations and large gatherings, monitor local media, follow the advice of local authorities as well as Ghanaian diplomatic authorities and maintain contact with officials at the University of Ghana.”
The directive comes amid heightened concerns over renewed anti-immigrant protests in South Africa, which have reportedly resulted in violence and the death of at least one Ghanaian, prompting calls for increased caution among Ghanaian nationals travelling to or residing in the country.
