The Assemblies of God, Ghana, has issued a firm advisory to its pastors and congregants, cautioning against enrollment in or reliance on academic credentials from unaccredited tertiary institutions. The directive follows an official alert from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) on Monday, October 20, 2025, which listed 50 institutions operating without valid accreditation.
In a statement dated Tuesday, October 21 and signed by General Superintendent Rev. Stephen Y. Wengam, the church emphasised the importance of verifying institutional accreditation with GTEC prior to undertaking any further studies. “As part of efforts by the Executive Presbytery to rid the church environment of unaccredited degrees and qualifications, pastors are cautioned against enrolling in such institutions or using certificates obtained from them,” the statement read.
The church also emphasised that any qualifications earned from unaccredited institutions — including doctorates or professional certificates — would not be recognised within the Assemblies of God.
GTEC’s earlier statement, signed by its Director-General, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, explained that the listed institutions failed to meet the required accreditation and quality assurance standards, warning the public and heads of tertiary institutions against dealing with them. The Assemblies of God leadership has, therefore, encouraged all pastors to exercise due diligence and uphold integrity in their pursuit of higher education.
