The Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) has repaired and deployed 48 previously grounded Aayalolo buses on major routes across Accra as part of efforts to improve public transportation and ease traffic congestion in the capital. The development has increased the number of operational Aayalolo buses in the Greater Accra Region from 80 to 128.
GAPTE Managing Director, Awudu Dawuda, disclosed this when the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, visited the Madina Aayalolo terminal. The visit was aimed at assessing the operations of the bus service and exploring measures to improve the efficiency of public transportation for commuters.
Mr Dawuda said expanding the number of operational buses remained a key priority for GAPTE, particularly as Accra continues to grapple with persistent traffic congestion. He explained that GAPTE inherited 80 operational buses and subsequently repaired 48 additional buses, which have since been deployed across its various routes.
“Of the 80 buses that we inherited, our priority was to enhance mobility and ease congestion in the Greater Accra Region. We therefore repaired over 48 additional buses, bringing the total number of operational buses on our corridors to 128,” he said.
