James Agalga, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Builsa North, has officially taken office as the new Majority Leader in Parliament. His appointment follows a communication from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, regarding changes in the leadership of the NDC Parliamentary Caucus. This shift comes after the former Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, was nominated as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs.
Upon assuming his new role, Mr. Agalga stated that he would take a consensus-driven approach in leading the Majority Caucus and engage with the Minority on issues that arise in the House. He expressed his commitment to consultation and compromise, assuring Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and members of the Minority Caucus that he would work collaboratively to ensure Parliament effectively fulfills its mandate.
“We can make compromises as needed, and I assure you that I will reach out and consult,” he said. “At the same time, I will work to ensure that the Reset Agenda of our President is accomplished for the betterment of all of us.”
In response, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin extended his support to the new Majority Leader, James Agalga, but emphasised that his ultimate goal is to transform the Minority Caucus into the Majority.
The Minority Leader said on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, August 27, after Agalga formally assumed the Majority Leader position, that he would not obstruct his counterpart but would instead provide an alternative perspective on government business.
“I am saying that you can find in me a friend. My job is not to obstruct you. My job is to offer a different lens to things you may not see,” Afenyo-Markin said.
