Paul Afoko, a contender for the position of National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged members to set aside personal grievances and rally behind a shared vision to restore the party’s strength following its 2024 electoral defeat.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face program on Tuesday, July 21, Afoko acknowledged the party’s current challenges, stressing the need for strategic leadership and collective commitment ahead of the next general election.
“Our party is in a difficult state. We have lost significant ground, and the situation is dire. We must work together to climb out of this hole,” he said. Afoko cautioned against allowing emotions to dictate decisions, emphasising that unity and clear‑headed strategy are essential for rebuilding.
“Let us unite. Do not harbor resentment against one another. When emotions drive politics, power is lost. We must put emotions aside and think strategically,” he added. Afoko, who recently declared his intention to return as NPP National Chairman, underscored that the task of rebuilding cannot rest solely on the leadership but requires the active support and participation of the entire membership.
He noted that despite not receiving any appointment when the NPP was in government, he remained committed to the party’s founding values and principles. “I didn’t get any appointment when the party was in power, but let’s hold on to our abiding principles that have glued us together all these years,” he said.
Appealing for support in the upcoming internal elections, Afoko urged delegates to give him the mandate to lead the party’s rebuilding efforts. “So join me, give me the mandate and also work because I can’t do it alone for us to bring our party together, to bring our party up to win our next general elections,” he added.
Afoko has consistently maintained that the NPP’s focus should be on restoring unity, strengthening its grassroots structures and positioning itself to reclaim power, rather than dwelling on blame for the party’s defeat in the 2024 general election.
