The Clean Up Accra initiative on Thursday, June 18, intensified its sanitation and desilting operations across the Greater Accra Region, targeting Tema, Ashaiman, and Amasaman in a bid to improve drainage systems and curb flooding. The exercise, led by Zoomlion Ghana Limited in partnership with Channel One TV and the Ghana Police Service, focused on clearing blocked drains to restore water flow in flood‑prone communities.

In Tema, desilting works were carried out at BBC in Community 2 within the Halcrow Electoral Area, where clogged drains were cleared to enhance sanitation and drainage efficiency. Similar operations took place at Ashaiman New Town in the Nii Doku Electoral Area, aimed at opening waterways and improving environmental hygiene in the densely populated community.

The campaign also extended to Amasaman in the Ga West Municipality, where gutters were desilted to support better stormwater management and reduce flood risks.
Management of Zoomlion Ghana Limited in the Ga West Municipality has urged stricter enforcement of sanitation by‑laws, stressing that consistent monitoring is essential to addressing the capital’s recurring flooding challenges. Municipal Manager Emmanuel Adjei Tabi underscored the need for sustained vigilance by local authorities, remarking: “The Assembly must constantly monitor the stretch so that those who are littering will be punished.”

Meanwhile, traders in affected communities have appealed for the provision of additional waste bins to curb indiscriminate dumping. The Clean Up Accra campaign continues to prioritise desilting drains, clearing refuse, and improving sanitation across communities in the Greater Accra Region.
