UCC Probes Death of Level 200 Student at Hutchland Beach

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has initiated an internal probe into the death of a Level 200 student whose body was found at Hutchland Beach on Friday morning. The deceased, identified as Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, was confirmed as a UCC student after police notified the institution.

In a statement, the Directorate of Public Affairs said the university is collaborating with the UCC District Police Command to determine the circumstances surrounding her death. The administration noted that the Office of the Dean of Students’ Affairs is coordinating the university’s response, assisting with identification procedures and providing relevant information to law enforcement.

According to UCC, the Dean of Students was alerted immediately after police indicated the victim was a student of the university. Officials are also facilitating communication between the police and the bereaved family, who visited the station on Saturday, June 13, 2026, to identify the body.

Management added that counselling and other support services are being provided to the deceased’s roommate, course mates and the wider student community affected by the incident. Meanwhile, police have taken charge of the criminal investigation and are expected to secure a coroner’s form on Monday, June 15, 2026, ahead of a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

Preliminary information indicates that Ms. Avinu, who lived in a private hostel at Amamoma, was last seen on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at about 7:00 p.m. Her roommate reportedly told investigators that she received a phone call, left the room dressed in casual clothing, and did not return.

The university and police have both urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information, warning that misinformation could interfere with ongoing investigations and deepen the distress of the bereaved family and the university community.

“The University Management has been duly informed, and appropriate support measures are being extended to the family, the affected roommate, colleague students, and course mates during this difficult period,” Acting Director of the Directorate of Public Affairs, Dr. Kwabena Antwi-Konadu, stated.

Investigations are ongoing.
