Legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has clarified that holding a diplomatic passport does not guarantee absolute immunity in all situations. He emphasised that diplomatic passports do not confer unlimited protection. “Diplomatic immunity does not cover everything,” Kpebu stated on TV3’s Key Points program on Saturday, May 16.
Kpebu also commented that he was not surprised by the manner in which the Asante Akyem North lawmaker was arrested. Mr. Kwame Ohene Frimpong is currently being detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Netherlands. This information was revealed by the Clerk to Parliament, Mr. Ebenezer Djietror, in a Facebook post on May 12.
The post stated: “It has come to the attention of Parliament that the Hon. Member for Asante Akyem North Constituency, Mr. Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has been detained at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam in the Netherlands.” It further noted that “The Rt. Hon. Speaker and the Leadership of the House are in contact with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague for further details. The public will be appropriately informed in due course.”
Ohene Kwame Frimpong is a Ghanaian entrepreneur and politician who contested the 2024 parliamentary elections as an independent and defeated the incumbent MP, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi. The US waited for him to get out of Ghana before he was arrested.
Speaking on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday, May 16, Kpebu said, “I am not surprised that he has been arrested in this way. It is about the Ofori-Atta. It is clear that Ofori-Atta is not coming anytime soon. “Because of that situation where Ofori-Atta is not coming anytime soon, it would have been too much to ask the Ghanaian government to bring Ohene. “The Abu Trica ones are pending; he is not going any time soon. Extradition is politics.”
