GHS probes the death of a pregnant woman at Kasoa facility

The Central Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has initiated an inquiry into a reported maternal death at the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital, amid allegations concerning the circumstances of the incident. The case involves a pregnant woman, Abigail Opoku, who died on Sunday, April 26, 2026, after allegedly being denied a caesarean section due to the unavailability of beds in the recovery ward.

In a press statement dated April 29, 2026, and signed by the Regional Director of Health Service, Dr. Alberta Adjebeng Biritwum-Nyarko, the Directorate acknowledged the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved family. The statement emphasised that the matter is being handled with “utmost seriousness,” noting that a dedicated committee has been established to investigate and clarify the circumstances surrounding the death.

The committee is composed of representatives from the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, the Trauma and Specialist Hospital, the Regional Health Directorate, the Regional Coordinating Council, and the Attorney-General’s office. According to the Directorate, the committee has been tasked with conducting a thorough, objective, and transparent investigation, with its findings and recommendations to be made public.

The Directorate assured that the outcome of the probe will contribute to strengthening maternal healthcare delivery and help prevent similar tragedies in the future. It further appealed for calm, urging the public to allow the investigative process to proceed without interference to ensure a fair and credible outcome. The statement reaffirmed the Central Regional Health Directorate’s commitment to patient safety, quality care, and the well-being of mothers and children.
