The Government of Ghana will issue a Request for Expression of Interest (RfEOI) in May 2026 for the establishment of a new national airline. The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen the aviation sector, boost tourism, and enhance regional and international connectivity.
In a departure from earlier plans, sources at AviationGhana with knowledge of the final documents awaiting cabinet approval confirm that the chosen strategic partner will be required to hold a 75% stake in the airline, while Ghana will retain 25% ownership. This partnership model is designed to draw on the expertise and resources of experienced global players, ensuring the airline’s long-term success and sustainability.
The decision to allow a majority stake for the strategic partner reflects Ghana’s commitment to attracting foreign investment and fostering a competitive aviation market. The government hopes that this collaboration will not only bring much-needed capital but also enhance operational efficiency and service quality.
Although the Request for Expression of Interest (RfEOI) is yet to be published, AviationGhana.com has confirmed that a North American airline, a European carrier, an African airline, and operators from the Gulf region have already expressed interest. Ghana’s aviation sector has faced significant challenges in recent years, including stiff competition from neighbouring countries and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The government’s plan to establish a new national airline is intended to revitalise the industry, create employment opportunities, and position Ghana as a key player in West African aviation. Industry stakeholders have welcomed the move, highlighting its potential to build a strong aviation hub that will facilitate trade and tourism.
With its strategic location on the West African coast, Ghana is well-placed to serve as a connecting point for international flights. The upcoming RfEOI is expected to draw interest from global operators, including established airlines seeking to expand their presence in Africa. Government officials have emphasised that priority will be given to partners with proven expertise and the capacity to deliver high-quality services.
