The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has constituted a seven-member committee to probe the fire outbreak that destroyed the GRIDCo substation at Akosombo on Thursday, April 23. The committee, chaired by William Amuna, Board Chairman of the Electricity Company of Ghana and former Chief Executive of GRIDCo, is expected to submit its report within two to three weeks.
Sector Minister John Abdulai Jinapor announced the move after inspecting the site on Friday, April 24. He noted that the National Security, the Ghana National Fire Service, and other relevant agencies have also been tasked to conduct parallel investigations. Jinapor emphasised that the committee will draw on technical expertise to ensure a comprehensive inquiry and establish the root cause of the incident.
“This is a matter we must thoroughly investigate. The ministry has therefore constituted a seven-member committee, chaired by Engineer William Amuna, former Chief Executive of GRIDCo and current Board Chairman of the Electricity Company of Ghana. The committee will include experts drawn from the Fire Service, National Security, the Energy Commission, and other relevant institutions to ensure a detailed inquiry. Within two to three weeks, they are expected to present a report that identifies the root cause of this incident and addresses all related concerns.
Our immediate priority, however, is the restoration of power. The ministry and its agencies are committed to doing everything possible to restore supply quickly, without compromising the integrity of the investigation. Importantly, the establishment of this committee does not prevent National Security, the Fire Service, or any other institution from conducting parallel investigations.
John Abdulai Jinapor also directed that a comprehensive overhaul and audit of all energy installations begin on Monday, April 27, 2026, to assess the country’s operational readiness. “As Minister, I’ve also directed that from Monday, April 27, we conduct a total overhaul and audit of all our energy installations to test our readiness again, even though periodically we conduct this exercise. We think that this situation calls for urgent action…” he said.
