DVLA to roll out Biometric International Driver’s Licences, vehicle permits in 2026

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) of Ghana has unveiled plans to upgrade its international travel documents to improve their global recognition and meet international standards. In a statement shared on the official Facebook page of DVLA Chief Executive Officer Julius Neequaye Kotey, it was revealed that the upgrade seeks to resolve instances where Ghanaian International Driver’s Licences (IDLs) and International Vehicle Permits (IVPs) have been rejected by some countries.

The initiative will introduce a Biometric International Driver’s Licence and a Biometric International Vehicle Permit, both of which will feature a bio-data page that adheres to International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) requirements. The DVLA describes this move as a strategic effort to establish a secure, modern, and internationally verifiable system for Ghanaian drivers and vehicles travelling overseas. Distribution of the new biometric documents is set to begin at all DVLA branches across the country in 2026.
