Chief Justice Getrude Torkornoo removed

President John Dramani Mahama has, in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution, removed the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, from office with immediate effect. The decision follows the receipt of the report of the Committee of Inquiry established under Article 146(6) of the Constitution to investigate a petition submitted by a Ghanaian citizen, Mr. Daniel Ofori, calling for the removal of the Chief Justice.

After examining the petition, extensive evidence, and testimonies, the Committee concluded that the allegations of stated misbehaviour under Article 146(1) had been sufficiently proven. It is therefore recommended her removal from office. Per Article 146(9) of the Constitution, the President is bound to act in accordance with the Committee’s findings and recommendations.

Announcing the decision in a statement on Monday, September 1, 2025, the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said the removal of the Chief Justice was in accordance of the law. He assured the public that the process was conducted in strict adherence to constitutional requirements, with both the petitioner and the Chief Justice afforded full opportunity to present their cases before the Committee.
