Mahama grants amnesty to 998 prisoners

President John Dramani Mahama has granted amnesty to 998 prisoners nationwide, following a recommendation from the Prisons Service Council in consultation with the Council of State, as outlined in Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution.

This decision is part of the President’s constitutional authority to exercise the prerogative of mercy in deserving cases. Out of a total of 1,014 inmates recommended for amnesty, 998 were approved. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidential Spokesperson and Minister of Government Communications, confirmed this decision in a statement.
