GUTA raises concerns about foreigners in retail business; threatens demo

Despite Section 27(1) of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre Act, 2013 (Act 865), which prohibits non-citizens and foreign-owned enterprises from engaging in retail trade, petty trading, hawking, or selling goods in stalls and markets in Ghana, the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) claims that foreigners are still participating in petty trading. GUTA points out that these foreign traders are violating the GIPC law without consequences and has urged the government to take immediate action.

Nana Kwabena Peprah, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of GUTA, warned that the association would organize a nationwide demonstration if the government does not intervene to halt the activities of foreign traders. “We have not received any response from the government following the protest at Circle, nor have we been invited to discuss these issues,” he stated. “Due to the protest at Circle, we’re receiving feedback from various sectors, including those in the regions.” He also emphasized, “People are becoming increasingly frustrated, and the government must act promptly. Otherwise, GUTA members will begin demonstrations regarding these issues.”
