Gov’t to cancel Teacher Licensure Exam on August 30

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has called for the final teacher licensure examination to be concluded no later than August 30. He urged all stakeholders to collaborate with the registrar to establish a firm date and ensure that the process is completed within this timeframe.

During a media address, Mr. Iddrisu acknowledged the ongoing concerns surrounding the licensure exams. He stated, “If there is a last opportunity for those who sat for the exams and couldn’t pass, that process should not extend beyond August 30.”

The Minister commended the chairman and members of the committee responsible for reviewing the teacher licensure framework, praising their significant recommendations aimed at adopting a more comprehensive and practical approach to assessing teacher readiness. He explained, “This new model will guide the teacher licensure exam beyond solely paper-based assessments.”

He added, “It incorporates supervised practicum evaluations and structured mentorship programs, ensuring that newly trained teachers not only possess theoretical knowledge but also demonstrate actual classroom competence.”

Mr Iddrisu noted that the new model would be implemented as soon as practicable, following the conclusion of the final licensure opportunity for candidates who need to resit or join the exam. According to him, the proposed reforms seek to improve the quality of education by ensuring that certified teachers possess the necessary practical skills alongside academic knowledge before entering the classroom.
