President John Dramani Mahama has condemned the killing of a military officer in Bawku, along with the reported military retaliation that resulted in injuries to several residents, including women and children. He expressed his condemnation during his visit to the Upper East Region on Thursday, March 20, 2025, as part of his “Thank You Tour.”
President Mahama emphasized, “I would like to take this opportunity to condemn the recent killing of a member of the Ghana Army in Bawku. The members of the Ghana Armed Forces who are deployed in conflict zones act as peacekeepers, tasked with protecting lives, property, and safety. It is unacceptable for them to become targets in a conflict in which they are not participants. Additionally, I would like to condemn the excessive use of force by our uniformed personnel, which resulted in assaults and injuries to many innocent civilians.”
“I understand the rightful anger over the loss of a fellow serviceman, but we must practice restraint and focus on effective intelligence gathering to identify and hold the culprits accountable. I would like to extend my condolences to the family of the deceased soldier and also express my sympathies to everyone who was injured or affected during the military’s counteraction.”
“The progress of our nation depends on the shared effort of all its people towards a common purpose and a collective vision for prosperity. The Upper East Region, like every other part of Ghana, deserves its fair share of development. The President also lauded the Asantehene for his mediation efforts in the Bawku conflict and called on the factions involved to cooperate with the Otumfuo.
