President John Mahama has instructed Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to quickly find solutions to the funding gaps in the country’s health sector, following the suspension of USAID assistance. In a letter to the minister, the president emphasized the need for urgent action, as this situation could hinder Ghana’s efforts to address critical issues such as maternal health, HIV/AIDS, family planning, and childbirth.
Mr. Mahama emphasized that the country is facing a funding shortfall of $156 million due to the suspension of USAID support. The president has urged the Finance Minister to seek alternative funding sources to address this gap and minimize any negative impacts on the country. When US President Donald Trump took office in January, he suspended USAID, which is a crucial form of international assistance provided by the United States to other nations. This suspension has affected many African countries in various ways. In Ghana, the Last Mile Distribution (LMD) of essential health commodities in the three northern regions is already being impacted.
