9 confirmed dead in illegal mining pit collapse at Atta Ne Atta in Asutifi South

Authorities have revised the death toll from last night’s illegal mining pit collapse to nine, following updated information reported by JoyNews’ Erastus Asare Donkor. The tragedy occurred at Atta Ne Atta in the Asutifi South District of the Ahafo Region—contrary to earlier reports that placed the incident at Manso Tontokrom in the Ashanti Region.

Hospital officials clarified that one of the bodies initially counted among the victims was unrelated to the cave-in, reducing the confirmed fatalities from ten to nine. Meanwhile, four injured miners remain on admission at the St. Elizabeth Catholic Hospital in Hwidiem, where medical staff confirm they are responding well to treatment as of this morning.

An undisclosed number of miners are still believed to have been at the site at the time of the collapse. Rescue efforts and assessments are ongoing as authorities work to establish the full scope of the incident and the cause of the cave-in.

Atta Ne Atta falls within the constituency of Collins Dauda. The community has previously been in the spotlight following a confrontation involving the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS).

This latest tragedy underscores the persistent risks associated with illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, and renews concerns over safety enforcement and regulatory oversight in mining communities.
