An Accra High Court has formally charged Pearl Agbomadzi, a 20-year-old interior decorator, with the murder of John Scott Hughes, a 74-year-old British national residing in Ghana. The incident reportedly occurred following a meeting between the two at American House, after which Hughes took Agbomadzi to Philipo’s Movie House, a well-known spot in East Legon, where he rented a room.
According to the prosecution’s account, Hughes, described as Ms. Agbomadzi’s boyfriend, allegedly invited her to watch explicit content together, which led to a consensual intimate encounter. However, Hughes reportedly became unconscious and collapsed mid-activity, prompting Agbomadzi to seek help from the hotel staff.
The staff alerted the police, and Hughes was rushed to Legon Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The complainant in the case is Hughes’ wife, whose statement has since been included in the investigation. The court proceedings took a significant turn when John Baptist Ayedze, counsel for Ms. Agbomadzi, applied for bail.
Assistant State Attorney Frederick Adu Gyamfi, representing the prosecution, did not oppose the application, and Presiding Judge Lydia Osei Marfo granted bail at GHS100,000 with a surety. In her closing remarks, Judge Marfo advised older men to exercise caution regarding their intimate relationships, particularly with younger women, noting the potential health risks due to significant age differences.
