Ghana’s Ministry of ForeignGhana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to implement a courier system to address the backlog of more than 75,000 unclaimed passports. During an appearance on The Key Points on February 8, Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced that an immediate audit will be conducted to identify applicants and ensure that unclaimed passports are delivered to their rightful owners.
“We will roll out a courier system so that applicants can receive their passports wherever they are. There must be a clear indication of who the applicants are, and if addresses are available, we will call them,” he stated. He added that digitization and operational reforms at the passport office would enhance efficiency and ensure faster processing times.
Touching on Diplomatic Passports, Mr Ablakwa hinted at a major review of the issuance system to curb abuse and enhance the country’s international reputation. He expressed concern over how diplomatic passports are currently issued, stating that they should be reserved for government officials and foreign service personnel. “There has been abuse. Diplomatic passports should not just be available to anyone. We need to streamline the process to protect our national security and international image,” he stated.
He referred to existing laws, including the NLC Decree 155, which outlines the categories of individuals eligible for diplomatic passports and committed to ensuring strict compliance with these regulations. “The way we are treated at embassies and airports depends on the credibility of our passports. We must restore their respect,” he emphasized. Ablakwa assured Ghanaians that a review would be conducted to ensure that only those who genuinely qualify receive diplomatic passports.
