Veep condemns sexual misconduct in SHSs, warns transfers not punishment

The Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has strongly condemned the increasing incidents of inappropriate sexual relationships between teachers and students in second-cycle institutions. Her remarks follow the emergence of a viral video allegedly showing the headmaster of KNUST Senior High School in a compromising situation with a female student. Another video reportedly depicts a male teacher engaged in sexual activity with a female student at Okadjakrom Senior High School.

Speaking at the Ghana Teacher Prize Ceremony at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) on Sunday, October 5, 2025, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang described these actions as a disgrace to the noble profession of teaching. She emphasised that while the government will not hesitate to punish individuals who violate the trust placed in them by students, transferring offending teachers should not be considered an adequate form of punishment.

“Leadership cannot ignore those teachers in positions of power who abuse our young pupils. The recent event involving one of our teachers in a management position is a case in point. As teachers, we must always remember that we are placed in a position of trust, protection, and empathy. “The power given to us is to facilitate learning. We will not wait to apply sanctions to those who violate that trust,” she said.

“Remember, transfers are not punishment and so they should never be used against those who abuse our children, betray their trust, and those who disgrace our profession.” The Vice President also announced plans to revive Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), aimed at promoting greater involvement of parents and guardians in the education and protection of young learners.

She further stated that the government will also prioritise collaboration with the National Teaching Council to raise the standard of teaching across the country. “The government has also decided to revive PTAs to encourage broader participation in forming our young learners,” she added. She concluded by encouraging teachers to embrace mentorship and lifelong learning as essential elements of their professional development.
