UDS student sentenced to death for murdering colleague over relationship dispute

A Computer Science student at the University for Development Studies, Nyankpala campus, Salifu Nurudeen, has been sentenced to death for the murder of his fellow student, Wumpini Mohammed Zakiu. The crime took place in September of last year and was rooted in a dispute over a romantic relationship. Nurudeen’s girlfriend, who is also a student at UDS, had ended their relationship and begun dating the victim.

On September 25, Wumpini’s body was discovered with multiple stab wounds, and his phone was missing. The police cybercrime unit later traced the phone to Nurudeen’s location, where it was found hidden under his bed. Evidence indicated that Nurudeen had used Wumpini’s phone to send messages, including one that pretended to be a breakup message to the girlfriend and another sent to one of Wumpini’s friends.

He was arrested after being lured to Jubilee Park. Nurudeen admitted to sending the text messages but denied murdering the victim. The Tamale High Court found Nurudeen guilty of murder, and he was subsequently sentenced to death.
