A tipper truck collided with a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus carrying approximately 11 lower primary school children on the Dzorwulu–Accra Mall stretch, resulting in several injuries among the students. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed the accident in a video shared on Facebook, stating that the school bus was transporting children returning from an excursion.
Eyewitnesses reported to Citi News that one child is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Police Hospital, while the other 10 children are receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital. Assistant Divisional Officer (ADO I) Alex King Nartey of the GNFS explained that the tipper truck struck the rear of the Sprinter bus, although the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation.
“This is the Fiesta Royale to Accra Mall stretch, where a tipper truck has collided with a minibus carrying children,” Nartey said. Footage from the scene revealed the severity of the crash, with visible blood stains inside the bus, a child’s school bag left behind, and extensive damage to both vehicles. ADO I Nartey stated that personnel from the GNFS National Headquarters Rescue Team had arrived to assess the situation and work on separating the involved vehicles.
“It looks like it is a Sprinter bus that was containing school children. It is believed that they had gone for an excursion, and this is the level of the impact,” he added. Authorities are yet to confirm the number of people injured, the condition of the children, or whether any fatalities have been recorded.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing as emergency responders continue their assessment of the scene. ADO 1 Nartey said officers from the National Headquarters Rescue Team had arrived at the scene to assess the situation and work to separate the vehicles involved in the crash.
“It looks like it is a Sprinter bus that was containing school children. It is believed that they had gone for an excursion, and this is the level of the impact,” he added.
Authorities are yet to provide further details on the number of casualties, the condition of the children, or whether any fatalities have been recorded. The cause of the accident is also yet to be determined as emergency responders continue their assessment.
